Heritkey vs. Bitwarden Emergency Access: which is better for passing on your passwords?

· 5 min read

Bitwarden is one of the most respected password managers, and its Emergency Access feature is well designed: your vault key is encrypted for your trusted contact, so Bitwarden itself can't read your vault. So why would anyone need something else? Here's an honest comparison.

Lock in the $3.99/month early-access price →Or $74.99 once for life. Your heirs never pay. Waitlist members keep the launch price.

How Bitwarden Emergency Access works

It comes with Premium and with paid organization plans such as Families. You invite trusted contacts, who need a Bitwarden account, though a free one is enough. For each, you choose View, to read your vault items, or Takeover, to set a new master password and take over your account, and a waiting period of at least one day. When a contact requests access, you can refuse; if you don't, access is granted when the waiting period ends.

Where it falls short for a family

  1. Your heir must become a Bitwarden user. For a partner who already uses it, easy. For a 75-year-old parent or a teenager, it's one more account and one more app to understand, at the worst possible moment.
  2. It only holds what's in Bitwarden. If some of your logins live in your browser, your iPhone or a notebook, they're not part of the handover.
  3. It's a vault of logins, not a plan. Bitwarden can store notes and attachments, but it isn't built to walk your family through what exists, who to call and what you wanted done with each account.
